TROLDHAUGEN MUSEUM – A PIECE OF NORWEGIAN CULTURAL HISTORY

– You just have to visit Troldhaugen, which was Edvard Grieg’s home. Below the main house you can find Troldsalen, a concert hall where performances of Grieg’s music are held, with windows offering views over lake Nordåsvanne and the composers cabin. The same views that inspired Edvard Grieg in his work.

If you are extra lucky, you may even get to experience a concert in the actual villa where Edward and Nina Grieg lived, and played on Grieg’s own Steinway grand piano from 1892. A wonderful experience, says Jørgen.

VISIT GAMLEHAUGEN – BERGEN CASTLE

The Christian Michelsen’s Villa Gamlehaugen from 1900 is also well worth a visit. Also referred to as “Bergen Castle”, Villa’s Gamlehaugen is magnificently situated in a park in the Paradis district, and is the official residence of the Norwegian Royal Family in Bergen.

The house is admittedly not a castle, but is modelled on a Scottish castle and has a fairytale feel to it.

For those who are quick on their feet, it is about an hour’s walk from Bergen city centre to the villa. Alternatively it is serviced by buses 67 and 84, and there is also parking for those arriving by car.

BRYGGEN AND FLØYEN ARE MANDATORY

– Now that I have mentioned two attractions from the area where I grew up, I must not forget to mention some of Bergen’s obvious attractions such as the famous Bryggen and a trip up Fløyen, adds Jørgen. Fløyen is one of the city mountains, with a splendid view that gives a good overview of the “city between the seven mountains” and the city fjord. The climb up the Fløisvingene trail is a good walk or run suitable for all ages, but the viewpoint can also be reached by means of a leisurely funicular railway.

FIRST CLASS SEA FOOD AT THE MOUTH OF THE FJORD

In the capital of Western Norway it is no problem to find somewhere good to eat and drink, and if you have a bit of time then Jørgen recommends a visit to his favourite restaurant, Cornelius. It is idyllically located on an islet at the mouth of the fjord, and serves fresh seasonal seafood. There are regular boat departures, but it is recommended to book a table in advance.

For lunch, he recommends Theatro, located right next to Den Nationale Scene and serves both Italian dishes and local fish soup.

– A great atmosphere and the city’s best Chili Martini, says Jørgen F. Eriksson, who also suggests setting aside some time for just walking around as well.

– Strolling around Bergen on summer’s day is an attraction in itself, he explains.
