BODØ

Bodø is surprisingly fierce. The scenery is stunning, but be careful of the current of Saltstraumen!

Fly to Bodø

Bodø is a place surrounded by sea, mountains, waves of hills and peaks. Bodø is the most densely populated city in Northern Norway, and the capital of Nordland county.

Just outside of Bodø is Saltstraumen, the world’s strongest tidal current. Did you know that a hundred million gallons of water pass through the strait every six hours? You can admire this from a safe distance, or you can get in a boat and really feel the forces of the current under the bow.

Lots of fish thrive in Saltstraumen: cod, pollock, halibut, wolf fish and angler fish. This abundant food source attracted hunters to settle here 10,000 years ago.

Activities in Bodø

Bodø is a friendly city with nice cafés. You can wander through Glasshuset above the walking street, visit niche shops or stop by the iconic Stormen library, designed by DRDH Architects. The Norwegian Aviation Museum is also worth a visit.

When you need lunch, you will find it at the harbor, where shrimp trawlers provide the freshest catch. Some of them also offer fishing trips and excursions to nearby islands.

We recommend taking a day trip to Kjerringøy or the double-sided beach at Hovdsundet. In Mjelle, there is a unique red sandy beach you shouldn’t miss. Whether you want to explore by bike, car or kayak, Bodø is a great place to start your adventure. Many start their bicycle tour of the Helgeland coast here!
