Fly to Helgeland

Your adventure starts in Brønnøysund, Sandnessjøen, Mosjøen or Mo i Rana. This is perhaps the most beautiful coast in the world, with ten thousand islands, white beaches and blue lagoons. It’s also paradise for kayaking, sailing and even bicycling.

The geology of Helgeland is fascinating: the earth’s crust stretches out into the ocean like a plateau, so the water is quite shallow and thousands of islands have poked up. Just off the coast, the plateau comes to an abrupt end and the water becomes much deeper.

Mountaineers and skiers will find themselves easily occupied in Helgeland. There is plenty of ground to cover, whatever the season. Ski touring in Børgefjell, Saltfjellet-Svartisen or Lomsdal-Visten is a real challenge!

Activities in Helgeland

Climbing Torghatten is surprisingly easy, and very much worth it! Hiking up to the characteristic hole in the mountain only takes about an hour, and is doable for most people.

If you like to do your exploring by bicycle, the Helgeland coast is just the place to do that! The roads and paths are nice and wide, and the terrain is comfortable. You will also come across the National Tourist Routes, which are known to be quite beautiful.

Off the coast, the islands await you: Dønna, Herøy, Træna and Vega. The locals call themselves «people of the sea», and you will soon see why. Boats are the main means of transport, and the sea is the basis of industry, culture and the way of life in this area.

The Vega Archipelago was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. Here, agriculture is in harmony with wildlife. The area is famous for having harvested eider down for centuries.
