The airport at Sandane is one of four airports that Widerøe services in Sogn og Fjordane. The town is located at the head of the Gloppenfjord, with the beautiful Ryssdalshorn as a backdrop, while the long sandy beach is just a few minutes walk from the town centre.
Can you hear Western Norway calling? Widerøe will happily fly you to Sandane this summer.
Historic Hotel with local food
Here, for example, you can stay in the traditional “salmon hotel” Gloppen Hotell, which dates back to 1829 and which was frequently visited by rich Norwegians as well as the English upper classes who came for the salmon fishing.
– It is a really good hotel, and they are renowned for serving fantastic local food and have received numerous awards. The raw ingredients must be produced no more than three kilometres from the hotel, explains Torill Rygg Eide, cabin crew member at Widerøe and also a resident of Sandane. – Untravelled food!
– I would also like to mention that Sandane has a cosy centre close to the fjord with shops, and cafes – such as Lauget Kaffi og Kultur, a guest pier, and a new and beautiful beach.
Fantastic for fishing and mountain hiking
Salmon fishermen and hunters make up a large proportion of the guests during the summer. In the Gloppenelva river you can fish for salmon, sea trout and brown trout.
If you take a trip up to Engeset or Traudalen, there is fresh water fishing, with views of the cultivated landscape and local peaks. Maybe a combination of fishing and hiking can tempt you?
If you find fishing boring, then Torill recommends for example a guided mountain bike tour with Gloppen Aktiv. Or you can hire a horse, canoe or simply go for a walk. There are plenty of opportunities for great hiking in the area.
The Kjærleiksskogen – A trail of Hearts
If you really want to enjoy the fantastic views, then you can book one of the treehouses at Engeset, which are something completely new in Sandane. From here you have a fantastic choice of hiking destinations with names such as Trivselsskogen, Kjærleiksskogen and Draumekvila.
Gloppen Camping is also a great place to stay. From the cottages it takes only 30 seconds to walk down to the beach where you can start your day with a refreshing morning dip! The campsite, which also rents apartments, has an outdoor pool, a viking ship on the jetty, and also offers boat rental
She also recommends a trip to the Trivselshagen leisure centre which has swimming facilities and a climbing wall, and to the Sandane Golf Club which has a nice course by the Gloppenelva river.
– Have a great trip to Sandane – one of the most beautiful places on earth, says Torill.
